Archaeology

Scheduled archaeological interventions in the project "The Time of Aliseda's Treasure" lead in the first instance to the immediate surroundings of the village Sierra del Aljibe and La Ayuela rural complex, both integrated in the basin of Salor river. Specifically, we intend an intensive prospecting in "site catchment analysis" of these sites, artificially bounded by two circles of 5 Km radius. Also, profiled sites in the Archaeological Inventory of Extremadura for this sector of the peneplain of Caceres will be reviewed. The resulting archaeological information will be crossed with that obtained years ago in the excavations in the Sierra del Aljibe (1995), the village on top of El Risco (Sierra de Fuentes, Cáceres) (1991 and 1993) and the building complex on the flat Torrejón de Abajo (Cáceres) (1989 and 1997) whose occupations overlap between the Late Bronze-Orientalising (IX/VIII-VI centuries BC) and the Postorientalising Period (VI-V centuries BC). Deserves special mention the geological and mining selective prospection evidence of tin, silver, lead, gold, copper, iron... collected on the Mapa Metalogenético de Extremadura (2007), to document possible evidence of protohistoric exploitation.

On the whole, these actions seek to outline the socio-economic and territorial context of the middle stretch of the river Tajo between VII-VI centuries BC, which frames the presence of one of the most important sets of orientalising jewelry in the Western Mediterranean. Moreover, the riverside castro of Sansueña illustrates the occupational pattern prevailing in this area between the end of V century BC and the arrival of the Romans.

As a novelty, we should refer the archaeological excavation (2011) in Las Cortinas, a place next to "El Ejido", where in 1920 appeared Aliseda's Treasure.
